Sadly, I'm in one of those "right to work" [for whatever employers want to pay us, apparently] states, where organizing would probably be wasted effort. I'm also close enough to a state where organizing is possible to know that it doesn't always work out well if all the faculty aren't in the same union: at one school I know of, the adjuncts at one school organized, and all of a sudden the school decided to create a lot more poorly-paid, high-teaching-load, year-by-year full-time jobs. Presumably the kind of union you describe could avoid that sort of end-run.
