So, it seems that all my boxes have arrived. A couple of them looked like bears had been at them somewhere in transit: ripped open and taped back shut. But it was only yesterday that I realized what was missing. First, a couple of exercise and yoga DVDs. Okay, that's too bad, but I hardly used them anyway. But here's the real kicker: the only actual books that were missing from my media mail box were four small paperback dicitonaries (Spanish, German, French, and Latin), and my friggin' copy of Lewis and Short!
Gah!!!
(For those of you who are not medievalists, "Lewis and Short" is shorthand for one of two canonical Latin dictionaries. Over two thousand pages long, and very expensive. Ouch.)
So, somewhere out there, there's a postal employee doing both yoga and Latin. Bastard.

Oh, crap! That would be enough to warrant an insurance claim. But you know, right, that L&S is accessible online, at least on days when Perseus is feeling perky? The link for dictionary headword searches is here. I think what I'd do is use that while watching and waiting for a deal to come around on a replacement. Some years, there's a real deal on L&S at Kalamazoo, and some years it shows up in the OUP sale. I'll keep my eye out.
Dude! I had this happen to a whole box of books one year--except that the box just went missing, with about 25 books inside--but none was as expensive as L&S. I'm so sorry to hear this. Damnit, shipping companies.
Ah. Dictionaries. Yes indeedy; check eBay. You may get your own books back!
I confess it. It was me. I took a part-time job as a postal worker just so I could make off with your Lewis & Short. Mwahahaha!
Definitely time for an insurance claim.
Bastardo! Definitely the insurance claim. I had to move quickly one year in college and so we hired movers to come and pack us up as well - and they apparently were palming things right and left! I lost a couple of objects d'art and some dvds. Were they putting them down the front of their coveralls?
Gah, I don't want them back!
I'm very sorry about the L&S...
So... what is this "insurance" thing you all speak of?
Damn.
I'm gonna go to the post office today, but I doubt there's anything they can do, since I have no way of proving what was in the box, and what was not.
Thanks for the link, TE. I'm gonna check it out, but I'm also going to get another copy of L & S when I can afford it. There's something about having it on my shelf that makes me feel like a real medievalist.
That sucks! I hope the dictionary makes it back to you safely. Reference books are expensive! I hope the move went well.
Oh, I can top that. In my boxes, I found boxes that weren't even mine. I now own a sizeable collection of books by a Christian inspiring author....heaven knows what I'm missing...
