Hi all,
I've gotten a lot of off-list e-mails (and one iTunes gift -- thank you, rootlesscosmo!) in the last 24 hours from people concerned about my mental health. I want to thank you all for your concern. That's nice to know that people are checking in -- even people who have never met me. And thanks for the words of wisdom and understanding from those who have been there.
But honestly, these are situational blues, and I'll be fine. The new semester has started, full of promise, as it always is. and a meeting with a retaining wall on my ride home from work (just in time for my one-year bikeversary!**) put it all in perspective:
Hard to get worked up over "Ooh, poor dear me, I have tenure and a book!" when you're suddenly missing a good piece of your epidermis, and wondering if the healing process is going to leave you with a dirt tattoo.
Guys dig chicks with road rash, right?
**One year, 1850 miles.

yes, guys do. Or at least the worthwhile ones :-) plus they like to kiss them better!
Now I feel bad for not worrying more about your mental health, but I figured I knew the feeling... which says what about me? eep! Clearly, we need to sit down together and drink massive amounts of tequila or martinis or somethign :-)
My word is sushilia -- love of sushi
OW!! Oh, ow. Sorry.
My word is "dexted" (well, okay, "dextedl"), which I think might be the technical term for what happened to you there.
Glad that things are in perspective, anyway? For what it's worth, scars are kinda cool.
Ouch ouch ouch!
Yikes! I hope your road rash looks worse than it feels, and if not, that you feel better soon.
Ouch! That's a nasty burvo! (Burvo is my verification word.)
Also: I envy your arms.
(I mean because they're so thin, not because they're bruised. I realized after posting that it sounded weird.)
My kids would be VERY impressed, giving you a lot of attention and detailed inspection.
I kinda thought you were joking about the depression---but now I'm perturbed because you really look very thin there. :)
Thanks, all. As for the arms (both the praise and the concern): I've lost weight, but not that much weight, I promise. It's just me having to hold my arm and shoulder in a weird way to show off my boo-boo to its best advantage.
And the new semester's business (plus the ambitious writing goals I set for myself) have perked me up considerably.
Yeow! If guys ARE attracted to road rash, you are going to have to fight 'em off with a bat!
Ouch! I fell while walking the other day, but my scrape was not nearly so impressive :)
And I'm sure road rash is the newest hot accessory, but I'll check with The Hills first.
That definitely looks sore! Is the bike okay?
Yeah, you'll heal for free, how's the bike? :-) (This may be too close to an actual guy response. May you repair quickly and suffer not at all!)
UH! That's really hard-core. Also--1850 miles? You could be most of the way here! Seriously, that's amazing.
I'm sorry about the guardrail encounter.
My verification word is WARDEFAN, which seems like some kind of guard-word.
Yeeowch. I hate it when that happens! I hope you heal quickly.
Ouch! Sorry.
Biking injuries have special status, though, once you get it covered in ointment, remember to wear that battle scar proudly, and welcome to the road warrior club!
