On to the next thing

Still thinking about some of the things that the post & comments brought up yesterday. Between that, and hanging out with my midwest friend who is an actual grown-up who says sensible things that I need to listen to, I've got a lot to chew on. But I'll spare you another does of navel-gazing for now.

For now, I'm enjoying one last morning surrounded by beautiful trees with leaves that shade of bright green they only are in spring, a breakfast at this small town's lovely café, and the company of a lovely person.

THEN... it's off to the next thing, which is Kalamazoo. Seeing friends, delivering a paper that miraculously doesn't suck, then another social call.

After which, I will work on the whole becoming-a-grown-up thing. I swear.

There are reasons we are academics, and "growing up" is not one of them. Capisce? "Growing up" is for cramp-ass fuckbags.

Anonymous, I respectfully disagree. It all depends on what "growing up" means, and the kind I'm talking about means that I behave with a bit more integrity and a bit less self-absorption.

That's not what I'm talking about, and I agree with you on this. (BTW, in case it wasn't obvious, that Anon was me. For some reason when I commented from my blackberry it didn't take me name.)

The funny thing about academia is that we, ultimately, study ourselves... right? For, at the core of it all exists our personal motivation and desire. We are the center of our little universes, even though we disguise our study as something larger and less narcissistic. So, yes, I get your sentiment and I see how what we do fosters this dilemma.

My antidote: get out there and forge the "other" parts of my life. I'll report back when progress becomes obvious. (grin)
