Girl Scholar's Sure-Fire, One Hundred Percent-Guaranteed Plan for Total Insanity in Twelve Weeks** or Less

So, perhaps I'm the only one paying attention to my blog's sidebar, but have you noticed that there's now not one but two word-counters there?

Yes, I'm insane.

I've finished the Shitty First Draft and Slightly Better Second Draft of the big article project that I want in review-ready (though anticipating one more revision before final submission) form by the end of the semester. But I've also got a conference coming up in November. And the paper actually has to be good, because the organizer got the bright idea of getting Esteemed Former Advisor to chair the panel.

(Eeep!)

I'm currently calming myself by telling myself that it's only ten or eleven pages, and I can write only ten or eleven pages on anything. But I also remember my disaster at Kalamazoo last year, when I discovered that I really couldn't, not always. And this is my first real foray into Shiny New Project territory.

So, this morning I read a book on the new topic. I'm on my way. Wish me luck.

**The "twelve weeks" of the title refer to the approximate length of time between the day I started this absurd write-every-day thing, and the end of the semester.

Don't be so impressed. Everything else in my life has completely fallen by the wayside. Hey! You've just given me the idea for my next post!

Good luck! I am a rookie at all of this, and my PhD supervisor wants me to try do a conference soon and send out an article in the spring. Should be interesting and possibly embarrassing. But I get lots of tips as I read your blog!

Best of luck on the conference paper. Not that you need it, you're on a roll, girl!!

Hey, wait...aren't you supposed to tell me that advisors stop scaring you once you get tenure??

Keep working; I'm sure you'll rock the conference! It is interesting, though, that Esteemed Former Advisor still has such power...

@ GEW: Within the next week or so, I'm going to post on the book I've been using. Watch for that one, as I think this book sounds perfect for the task you've been set.

@ Alice & ER Doc: I have to set the record straight here. It's not fear or power in play here. He can't do anything to me, nor would he (just not that kind of guy, though I know there are Ph.D. advisors who are). The fact is that I really, really respect this guy, and since I'm presenting before people whose opinion he values, it would be a sad think if I embarrassed him. I'm much more worried about letting him down than about falling flat on my own face. I'm used to doing the latter, after all.

Here's hoping that insanity = productivity.

Dr N., I just landed some teaching and am suddenly feeling much more of your pain than I was previously. Good luck with the words; meanwhile, sanity can be recovered in vacations, given the right people and environment. I'll work on that later...

The idea of even vaguely disappointing someone you admire is way worse than simply falling on your face in front of strangers or mere acquaintances. But you've been making such good progress lately I am sure your paper will be great.
