Nobody ever told me

...about post-tenure/post-book depression. ADM has a great post on why your recently tenured friends might not be turning cartwheels 24 hours a day, but this is a bit different. So, I e-mailed my friend Dr. S., and then went out and took a picture:

Nothing spectacular, but it's a step.

"It was on the ...night of the 27th of June, 1787, between the hours of eleven and twelve, that I wrote the last lines of the last page in a summer-house in my garden. ... I will not dissemble the first emotions of joy on the recovery of my freedom; and perhaps the establishment of my fame. But my pride was soon humbled, and a sober melancholy was spread over my mind by the idea that I had taken my everlasting leave of an old and agreeable friend."

You'll get a big boost when you actually hold the book in your hands.

It might date me a bit, but the best prep that I ever had for such moments of crises was the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime".

You've laboured mightily for a great achievement and, yet, when all the hoopla is over, do you and your situation seem much changed? Not really. But it has changed -- you just won't really feel that seeping into every corner of your life until a few more years have gone by.

Color me completely envious of post-tenure/post-book depression.

And, yes, you can remind me I said so if I ever get there.

I was quite depressed for several months after my tenure vote. I had scambled to finish projects and had nothing on my plate, not even a good idea or two. Also, I had no life whatsoever.... I seriously considered leaving academia.

Well, a year later here I am with a few research projects and still no life, but generally feeling better about it. I hope you one-up me.

@ Anonymous 6:18 -- That is exactly where I'm at. Thanks for putting it so well. I'm hesitant to substitute "another project" for an actual life, but that might be the way I end up going, just to keep my head on the right side of the oven door.
